Centenary Commemoration of 1st World War

On Friday 9th November, St Mark’s students commemorated the 100th anniversary of the First World War with a special assembly. Students considered the human cost of the Great War both in terms of the horrific casualties and on the impact on those left behind. As part of the assembly, each tutor group sent representative to place a planter of poppies which were made by the students during tutor worship in the weeks leading up to the assembly. Each student created a paper poppy using red cardboard for the flower, and green cardboard for then leaf. Adding a personal twist, the leaves were made by drawing around their hand, and were then used to add a personal message. Some students chose to write a message about a family member who was involved in the First World war, others thanked them for their service, and some simply included the poignant message “We will remember them”. The assembly concluded with students observing two minutes silence.

The poppy planters will be displayed around the school this term. Watch this as spring blooms to see what else we have in store…
