Rising to the Challenge – DofE Practice Expedition
On 14th–15th March, our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze participants took on their practice expedition, walking for two days and camping overnight. This challenging experience helped them develop key skills such as navigation, teamwork and first aid while testing their resilience in an outdoor setting.
The first day brought clear skies and sunshine, making for pleasant walking conditions. However, as night fell, temperatures dropped below freezing, presenting a real challenge for the students as they camped overnight. Despite the cold, they showed great determination and adaptability in managing the conditions.
The first day focused on navigation training, first aid practice, and discussions about the country code and teamwork. Once at camp, the groups efficiently set up their tents, managed their cooking equipment safely, and prepared their expedition meals. After breakfast, the second day saw them putting their navigation skills to the test, learning to manage their timings and walking pace more effectively.
The expedition was a fantastic opportunity for all participants to grow in confidence, work together, and refine their outdoor skills. Their determination and enthusiasm have set a strong foundation for the final assessed expedition in May—well done to everyone involved!
